This is a followup to my things I miss about Android post. I really wish I could have everything in 1 product, but I guess that’s the downside of competition. Here’s my list of things I would miss about iOS if I switched back to Android:
- media player: The media player in iOS just works. It’s so nice. Where in android you never know what’s going to happen when you press the play button on your headphones (I know there are apps to fix this). Also the ability of the media player to play either audio or video interchangably. in iOS it just works. In android its like google things I want a difficult seperation between my types of media. Also iOS can play just the audio of a media track in the background if I want to do something else and just listen to the audio part of the video. Basically iOS media handling ROCKS and Android’s SUCKS!
- vpn: This one is pretty simple. I can access my work vpn on my iPhone, but never could on my android phone despite the both saying the support the same standards. Android vpn sucks!
- airplay: I bought an apple TV partly so I could stream content from my iPhone. I’m not sure if there is a compatible player/service in android that can stream to an apple tv, but if you read my media player bitch session, you’ll understand why I doubt that it works well if its there.
- better apps: iOS apps have more polish. Android, despite having a larger market share, doesn’t seem to attract the first line developers as much as iOS. So Android only gets the app after its successful on iOS for a year. Examples include the recent release of instagram on android.
- super fast high quality photos: I don’t even carry my camera anymore because my iPhone 4s has such an amazing quick camera.
- apple ecosystem: I like having a company that thinks about ease of use in its design behind my phone. It’s a little frustrating that they take their time on new features. But for the most part new features are very polished.

Just wanted to jot down a few things I miss about android, and then do another list of things I would miss from iOS if I switched back. Feel free to add to my list in the comments
- File Access: I really miss the ability to access files on the sd card directly!
- SSH client: There are no free ssh clients for iOS and this makes me sad :(
- hackability: this is a 2 way street, unfortunately I feel android has to be rooted to be useful, but the ability to do things once it’s rooted is amazing! iOS can be “jailbroken” but I’ve found it to be quite unsatisfying!
- Navigation and good mapping
- LOTS of free apps
- easy access to beta/3rd party/open source apps. iOS AppStore is nice, but too limited especially when it comes to open source apps.
- syncing with the google ecosphere… iCloud is better than what was there before, but it still has a LONG way to go.
- cloud music choice: media playback is SO much better in iOS, but choice is so much worse!
